Regarding Dog Ownership, We Know It All

Owning a dog carries a lot of serious responsibilities. You have to make sure you raise a happy and healthy dog. Understanding how to reach such a balance requires you to learn everything possible, and this article is here to help.

If you are going to taking your dog on vacation, take a pic of him on your phone. If the worst happens and your pet gets lost, you have a current picture that you can show others or use to make “lost” posters.

If you keep some medication in your home, make sure your dog cannot access it. Swallowing a couple pills could can serious health issues, even heart attacks and seizures. Call your vet as soon as possible if your dog swallows any pills.

Fight the urge to feed table scraps to your dog. This will make your dog beg all of the time and also will make it not want to eat its regular food as much. Overfeeding him will lead to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, too. You can keep your dog healthy and avoid any temptation to feed it from the table by teaching it to spend dinnertime well away from your family.

Your dog will need a dog house if it is going to be outside in colder temperatures. If your dog’s feet get wet, then the continued exposure can lead to stress and other health issues. Give your dog a shelter that is spacious and dry, and your dog will be protected from the hard winds and dampness.

Do not force your dog to eat things. If you have purchased treats the dog does not appear to enjoy, do not force the issue. When you have a new dog, take time to learn what they do and don’t like.

Trim your dog’s nails on a regular basis. Your dog will be in pain if the nails begin curling. These can be trimmed at home if you use nail clippers from the store. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, you can take him to the groomers and have them done for very little money.

Teach your dog the right way to walk with a leash. Make him walk at your side, and do not let him pull far in front of you or stay far behind. Use the command “heel” to prompt him. If you do this, your dog will be safe, and it will be easy for you to handle. When you dog understands the command to heel, you can relax occasionally and walk with a loose leash without having your arm pulled off.

Separation anxiety could be a problem with your dog. If so, show him extra love and attention and leave music on while you are away. The sound of music could help him feel more secure and keep him company. It could be just what he needs to get over his anxiety while he waits for you to come home.

The things you have learned here should help you get things to where they need to be. Change habits to accommodate the dog and get more out of your efforts. If you won’t do whatever it takes to give your dog the best life possible, why have one at all?
